Wānaka

Kāi Tahu Whānui could be found at the settlement at Manuwhaia (known by pākeha as The Neck). There, the people of Manuwhaia established a “Wānaka ''—the Kāi Tahu variant of the word “wānanga” which refers to ancient schools of learning.

In these schools Kāi Tahu tohuka (men of learning) would be taught whakapapa and karakia for innumerable situations.

From the very beginning this place has been about community, sharing knowledge and educating — it's always been about manaakitanga and connection, it's always been about spirituality and nurturing all life. After a great shift it was time to blow on the embers and get the fire burning once again.

The focus of Toi is to enhance wellbeing through the arts here in the Upper Clutha area, as well as strengthening the commercial and community aspect of creative practitioners and businesses.

Workshops, exhibitions and events celebrating creativity, revitalising the arts, bringing our people together and acknowledging and commemorating those that have carved these paths before us.

“Our new brand feels like us. It’s spot on. And since the refresh, we’ve noticed a real shift in how we communicate and show up. We're proud of our brand now in a way we weren't before, and that has elevated everything we do. Britt has an incredible ability to distil the essence of a business and help to express it with care and purpose. We’d work with her again in a heartbeat.”
